Diamond 6 turf infield – open house

CENTRAL SAANICH LITTLE LEAGUE

ALEXANDER FIELD – DIAMOND 6

PROPOSED SYNTHETIC TURF INFIELD – FALL 2024

OPEN HOUSE – Centennial Park Fieldhouse

SATURDAY DECEMBER 2nd – 11am to 1pm

WHY

Simply put we have the desire from more local kids to play baseball year-round. Your local non-profit Little League has grown from 177 children playing in 2015 to over 500 expected in 2024. Much of that growth started out as younger kids who are now moving into the teenage divisions of play. With that growth has come increased demand for longer baseball seasons. We currently offer the following programs:

Jan – Mar – indoor winter clinics

Apr – Jun – spring baseball

Jul – Aug – summer baseball

Sep – Oct – fall baseball

Nov – Dec – indoor winter clinics

Adding the synthetic turf infield not only provides a better and safer playing surface during the spring, summer and fall programs but it also increases the chances to play outside during the winter months. This allows many kids to continue to play with their friends for longer.

WHO BENEFITS

The program has and will continue to promote fair play and equality for everyone. This means that all our kids will have the ability to play on the new infield.

CSLL is currently the only user group scheduling on the D6 baseball field. We anticipate many other users to request to play there after significant time and money has been spent by CSLL to improve the community field. Therefore, we are asking the District of Central Saanich for a 20 year lease to use the infield area so that we can prioritize local baseball, softball, and fastball organizations. It remains a local community park available to all residents of Central Saanich.

COST

The price to prepare the ground preparation and turf installation will be near $300,000. CSLL will be providing all of that with an initial $200,000 of that total. We are requesting the remaining $100,000 be provided by an interest free loan from the District of Central Saanich for period not to exceed 10 years with a minimum repayment of $10,000 per year. Thanks to the many local businesses who support CSLL our financial position remains very strong with good annual profits.

ENVIRONMENTAL

CSLL recognizes the need to be environmentally friendly. The synthetic turf is NOT being filled with any harmful products. We would be using a sand infill. Drainage for the infield would be sloped and connected to the local storm sewer system with the approved catchment basin in place to monitor the wash from the infield.

OUR GOAL

CSLL’s goal will continue to be focused on raising good kids within a strong volunteer community. Baseball is just our way of getting the community together to play. We are very fortunate to work with the District of Central Saanich to improve the local park which is truly a gem of the lower island. This newest improvement will allow more kids to play together longer.

2023 field conditions are being improved by the District of Central Saanich installing new backstops and dugouts. CSLL has updated the clubhouse as well as having installed a new scoreboard at diamond 6 in 2021. Below is an overhead of the current infield as of August 2023.
